Stade Brestois 29
From a port city in Brittany to the Champions League. Stade Brest's qualification for Europe's elite club competition in 2024 was one of football's great underdog stories — and they're not done yet.
Stade Brestois 29 — known simply as Stade Brest — is one of French football's most compelling stories of the modern era. Based in the port city of Brest at the far western tip of Brittany, the club punches far above its weight in terms of resources, fanbase and infrastructure. Their Stade Francis-Le Blé holds just 15,094 spectators — tiny by Champions League standards — yet in the 2024-25 season they became only the second club from Brest to ever compete in European football's top tier.
The 2024-25 Champions League qualification was earned the hard way, through a sustained run of Ligue 1 form that left bigger, better-resourced clubs in their wake. Manager Éric Roy built a tactically disciplined side that pressed high, defended deep when needed, and took their chances with clinical efficiency. Key figures like Romain Del Castillo and loanee Martin Satriano from Inter Milan provided the goals and creativity. In 2025-26, with the spotlight firmly on them, Brest face their biggest challenge yet — sustaining that performance level in both Ligue 1 and European competition.
The Champions League Dream
When Brest confirmed Champions League qualification at the end of the 2023-24 season, it was met with scenes of extraordinary emotion at Stade Francis-Le Blé. This was not a club with billionaire backers, an elite academy pipeline or decades of top-flight experience. This was a modest club from western France doing something extraordinary through collective effort and tactical intelligence.
Manager Éric Roy has been the architect of this transformation. A former midfielder who played at the top level in France, Roy brought defensive organisation and attacking creativity in equal measure. The team built around Del Castillo's technique and Satriano's physicality proved perfectly suited to Ligue 1's demands while also standing up in European fixtures.
