Hellas Verona FC carry the history of a remarkable city. Verona — famous for its Roman amphitheatre, its connection to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and its position at the gateway to the Italian Alps — takes its football with an intensity that matches its cultural heritage. The club, founded in 1903, are known as the Scaligeri (after the medieval Scaligeri family who ruled Verona) and wear the city's blue and gold with fierce pride.
The club's greatest moment came in 1985 when they won the Serie A title — one of the division's great shock champions. Midfielder Preben Elkjær was the talisman, and manager Osvaldo Bagnoli built a side that conquered Italy's most storied league. That championship banner still hangs at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi, a reminder of what this club is capable of when everything aligns.
