High Press Football Tactics
From Klopp's gegenpressing revolution at Dortmund and Liverpool to Arteta's Arsenal press, high press football has defined the modern game. Explore the tactics, the coaches, and the teams that have made pressing an art form.
What Is Gegenpressing?
Gegenpressing — literally "counter-pressing" in German — is the tactic of immediately pressing opponents to win the ball back within seconds of losing it. Rather than retreating into a defensive shape, teams sprint towards the ball.
Jürgen Klopp famously described it: "The best playmaker in the world is gegenpressing." The premise is simple — the opposition is disorganised immediately after winning the ball, making it the optimal moment to win it back.
The Master Pressers
The godfather of modern gegenpressing. Won the Premier League and Champions League deploying high-octane press football at Liverpool.
Refined the press into a possession-based system at Arsenal. His structured press has made the Gunners Premier League title contenders.
Guardiola's "juego de posición" uses the press differently — winning the ball high to maintain possession dominance, not to counter directly.
A Klopp disciple who adapted gegenpressing to elite European football. His England side brought the press to international football in 2025.
