Grande Torino: Football's Most Brilliant Lost Team
The Grande Torino of the 1940s were a team so dominant, so complete, that they won five consecutive Serie A titles between 1943 and 1949 — a run that would have continued indefinitely had tragedy not intervened. Their style was revolutionary: pressing from the front, fluid positional interchanges, and an intensity that wore down opponents long before it became fashionable. Valentino Mazzola — father of Sandro Mazzola of Internazionale fame — was their inspiration, a midfielder of extraordinary quality who played with invention and passion. When the Superga air disaster took the entire first-team squad in May 1949, Italian football lost its greatest team and Torino lost its soul. The grief never fully lifted, but the pride in what Grande Torino achieved lives on in every granata.
Superga: A Tragedy That Defines a Club
On 4 May 1949, a Fiat G.212 aircraft carrying the Torino squad back from a friendly in Lisbon crashed into the Basilica of Superga on the hills above Turin. All 31 people on board perished — 18 players, 3 coaches, 3 club officials, 3 journalists, and 4 crew members. It was the most catastrophic loss in football history. Every year on that anniversary, supporters make the pilgrimage to Superga to pay their respects. The memorial at the basilica wall is one of football's most moving sacred sites. Torino's identity is shaped permanently by Superga — the knowledge that they were once the world's greatest, the grief of what was lost, and the determination to honour the fallen by always playing with heart and commitment.
Modern Revival: Cairo's Torino Pushes for Europe
Under owner Urbano Cairo — who has run the club since 2005 — Torino have established themselves as a consistent Serie A presence after years of lower-table struggle and financial difficulty. The long-term project has focused on stability, intelligent recruitment, and developing a strong team identity rather than chasing expensive stars. Under Ivan Juric — a demanding, intense coach who demanded high pressing and physicality — Torino reached the Europa League Conference League play-offs and consistently finished in the top ten.
