How the Golden Glove Is Decided

🏆

The FIFA Technical Group

The Golden Glove is not decided by public vote. FIFA’s Technical Study Group — composed of former elite players and coaches — assesses every goalkeeper’s performance across the tournament. They weight clean sheets, save percentage, distribution quality, command of the area, and decisive saves in high-leverage moments. A keeper who guides their team to the final with multiple penalty shootout saves will be virtually impossible to overlook.

📊

Key Metrics That Matter

Clean sheets matter enormously — but context matters too. A keeper who keeps clean sheets against weak group stage opponents scores less credit than one who produces a magnificent save against a top-10 ranked nation. Post-Shot Expected Goals (PSxG) — the quality of shots faced minus goals conceded — is increasingly used to separate the best. A negative PSxG differential means the keeper is genuinely outperforming expectations, not just facing weak opposition.

🥇

Past Winners

Gianluigi Buffon won the award at the 2006 World Cup when Italy lifted the trophy — widely considered the greatest tournament goalkeeping performance ever. Manuel Neuer won it at 2014 for reinventing the sweeper-keeper role. David De Gea’s 2018 performance for Spain was exceptional, though it did not translate to a trophy run. Hugo Lloris took the 2018 prize with France’s World Cup win. Emiliano Martinez’ penalty shootout heroics in 2022 made him the clear 2022 winner with Argentina.

Top Contenders for 2026

Emiliano Martinez — Argentina

Aston Villa / Argentina

Favourite

Emi Martinez is arguably the world’s best goalkeeper right now and the defending World Cup Golden Glove holder. His 2022 performance was a masterclass in big-occasion goalkeeping — including the penalty shootout save in the final against France that broke French hearts and secured Argentina’s third world title. Martinez is a psychological weapon in shootouts and his ability to unsettle penalty takers through demeanour and movement will be crucial in a 2026 knockout stage. At 34 by the tournament, this may be his final World Cup — expect him to give everything.

Mike Maignan — France

AC Milan / France

Contender

Mike Maignan has fully established himself as one of Europe’s elite keepers at AC Milan. Quick off his line, outstanding in the air, and distributing with the composure of a central midfielder — Magic Mike is everything a modern keeper needs to be. For France, he represents a generational upgrade on Lloris. France are one of the tournament favourites, and if Maignan leads Les Bleus to the final, he will be among the top candidates for the Golden Glove.

Ederson — Brazil

Manchester City / Brazil

Contender

Ederson’s distribution is the best of any goalkeeper in world football. His ability to launch attacks with laser-accurate long passes effectively gives City and Brazil an extra midfielder. In 2026, if Brazil play expansive football as expected, Ederson’s role in build-up will be as prominent as any outfield player. His shot-stopping has also developed significantly — he is no longer simply a ‘goalkeeper who can play with his feet’ but a complete keeper in every department.

Manuel Neuer / Oliver Baumann — Germany

Bayern Munich / Hoffenheim — Germany

Watch

Neuer at 40 may be the starting keeper for Germany at a home-continent tournament, but Germany’s succession plan has created genuine competition. Baumann’s consistent Bundesliga form has pressed Neuer, and by 2026 Germany may field a younger keeper. Whoever gets the shirt for Die Mannschaft will be under enormous pressure as Germany seek their first World Cup title since 2014 — but also in a wonderful position to claim the Golden Glove if Germany go deep.
