The city itself is one of Italy's great historic centres — birthplace of Christopher Columbus, home to the world's first operational lighthouse, and a maritime power whose influence shaped the Mediterranean for centuries. Genoa CFC are as much a part of that city's story as anything else.

The club's nine Italian league titles — all won in the pre-war era between 1898 and 1924 — speak to a golden period when Genoa dominated Italian football. Since then, the club has experienced the full range of football's fortunes: relegations, promotions, near-misses and comebacks.
