Manchester United
The Rebuild
Ruben Amorim arrived from Sporting CP with the mandate to rebuild one of the world's biggest clubs from the ground up. This is the inside story of United's transformation — the highs, the frustrations and the roadmap to the top.
The Rebuild in Four Phases
Amorim takes charge
Ruben Amorim arrived from Sporting CP with his 3-4-3 system. The initial months were turbulent — results inconsistent, squad not suited to his preferred shape.
Surgical rebuild begins
INEOS backed Amorim with targeted signings. Youth promoted from the academy. Several high earners (including Rashford) moved on. The squad started to reflect Amorim's philosophy.
Identity emerging
United showed genuine improvement across large stretches of the season. Europa League progression. A younger, more cohesive starting XI was evident by February.
The big push
With Old Trafford redevelopment talks advanced and a clearer transfer strategy, 2026-27 is positioned as the season United make a genuine top-four challenge.
Amorim's 3-4-3 System Explained
The Shape
Amorim's preferred 3-4-3 uses wing-backs who are essentially full-backs with a licence to get forward. Three centre-backs provide defensive solidity. The front three are fluid — pressing in waves, switching positions constantly to create confusion.
In Possession
United build from the back with the goalkeeper as the first outlet. The wing-backs push high and wide, stretching the opposition to create central pockets for the double pivot to operate in. Vertical passes into the strikers are prioritised over sideways football.
Without Possession
A high-intensity press from the front three forces turnovers in dangerous areas. If the press is bypassed, United drop into a compact 5-4-1 block that is hard to break down through the middle — opponents must go wide, where United's wing-backs are well-positioned to intercept.
Key Figures in the Rebuild
Ruben Amorim
Head Coach
Arrived from Sporting CP in late 2024, where he built a dominant Portuguese side that won two Liga Portugal titles. Known for loyalty to his system and youth development — has promoted academy talent at every club. The 3-4-3 is non-negotiable.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe / INEOS
Majority owner (football ops)
INEOS took control of football operations in 2024. Their approach has been to cut bloated wages, structure transfers more efficiently and invest in analytics infrastructure. The results are not immediate but the foundation is more sustainable.
Bruno Fernandes
Captain
The captain remains United's most creative force. Amorim has freed Bruno to operate in more advanced areas under his system — with a double pivot behind him taking defensive responsibility. Has embraced the new regime fully.
Academy Pipeline
The future
Amorim is a known developer of youth talent. Several academy players have been integrated into first-team training and matchday squads. The Carrington setup is one of the best in England — leveraging it is central to INEOS's long-term plan.
