WC2026 Golden Boot Race
The FIFA World Cup Golden Boot is awarded to the tournament's top scorer, with assists as the first tiebreaker and then minutes played. Harry Kane (2018, 6 goals) and James Rodriguez (2014, 6 goals + assists) are the recent benchmark. At WC2026 with 48 teams and 104 matches — up from 64 — expect the record of 13 goals (Just Fontaine, 1958) to be challenged. Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé, and Vinicius Jr are pre-tournament favourites for the golden boot.
Group Stage Goal Highlights
WC2026's expanded 48-team group stage produces 72 group matches — 12 more than WC2022. More games means more goals, more upsets, and more dark-horse scorers emerging. North American host crowds are expected to generate electric atmospheres at MetLife, Rose Bowl, and SoFi Stadium, driving attacking play. Knock-out football inevitably becomes more cagey, but the group stage should produce memorable goals from all over the world.

The WC record is Ronaldo's 8 goals across multiple tournaments (Brazil's Ronaldo, 1994-2006). Just Fontaine's 13 in a single tournament (1958) remains untouchable as a single-tournament record. However, WC2026's 104-game format means theoretically a striker could play 7 group matches instead of 3 — a genuine advantage for the host nations' forwards. Tournament rules and manager selections will determine which strikers get the match time needed to challenge the record.
