Arteta's 5th Season — The Culmination of a Project
When Mikel Arteta was appointed in December 2019, Arsenal were 8th in the Premier League and suffering through one of the least coherent spells in their history. Six years later, the transformation is nearly complete. The 2025-26 squad is the most technically complete Arsenal side since the Invincibles era — deep, versatile, physically dominant and built around the right blend of youth and experience.
The 2023-24 campaign remains a measuring stick: Arsenal led the table for much of the season, ran an extraordinary 49-game unbeaten league run at one stage, and pushed Manchester City to the final day before finishing second. The lesson Arteta drew was not tactical — it was psychological. The squad needed to believe it could win a title under maximum pressure, not just push a champion close.
In 2025-26 the challenge is defined by the same variables: Can they maintain form during the Champions League knockout rounds in March and April while sustaining a title push? The Defensive Foundation — Saliba, Gabriel & the Arteta System
Arsenal's title credentials rest heavily on their defensive structure, which has become one of the most cohesive in Europe. William Saliba, now established as one of the best centre-backs in the world, partners Gabriel Magalhaes in a pairing that offers both aerial dominance and the ability to carry the ball out of pressure. The two have started together for over 100 Premier League matches since their pairing was cemented in 2022-23.
Declan Rice's role as the holding midfielder in Arteta's 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 hybrid is central to the press-resistance that allows the full-backs to push aggressively. Rice's positional discipline and ball-recovery rate are among the best in the league, giving Arsenal the engine to transition quickly from defence to attack — particularly through Saka on the right, who benefits from Rice's ability to recycle possession at pace.
The key injury concern remains Odegaard's fitness. In 2024-25 a recurring ankle issue restricted him to 28 league starts, and Arsenal visibly struggled to build rhythm from deep when he was absent. His return to full fitness by pre-season 2025 was the critical summer news story — if he stays available for 35+ league games, Arsenal are genuine title contenders. If he breaks down again, Arteta's depth in the number 10 zone will be tested.
