The Road to Wembley

The FA Cup begins each season with hundreds of non-league clubs dreaming of a giant-killing run. By the time the fifth round arrives, the Premier League's heavyweights have entered the competition and the path to Wembley becomes significantly clearer. The quarter-final draw narrows the field to eight, with the semi-finals — also held at Wembley — determining who earns the right to contest the showpiece occasion on FA Cup Final day.

Wembley Stadium, with its iconic arch and capacity of 90,000, has hosted the FA Cup Final since 2007 following the reconstruction of the old national stadium. Few sporting occasions in the English football calendar rival the pageantry and atmosphere of Cup Final day — the community singing, the pre-match ceremony, and the trophy lift that follows a gruelling season of knockout football all contribute to an atmosphere that clubs and supporters cherish as one of the highlights of any season.

Giant-Killing and Tradition

What sets the FA Cup apart from other domestic competitions is its open entry. Any FA-affiliated club — from the ninth tier of the English football pyramid — can enter the competition, creating the conditions for some of football's most memorable upsets. The history of the competition is littered with moments where lower league clubs have defeated top-flight opposition: Wimbledon beating Liverpool in 1988, Wigan Athletic defeating Manchester City in 2013, and Bradford City seeing off Chelsea in 2015 all stand as defining examples of the cup's unpredictable magic. Every season, at least one minnow captures the imagination of the neutral as they threaten to go deep into the competition.
