Captaincy Strategy

🥇
Premium Captain
Salah, Haaland, and Saka are the template captaincy options. Owning at least two of the three ensures you don't miss a mega-haul.
🎲
Differential Captain
A differential captaincy from a player owned by under 10% of managers can skyrocket your rank. Best when against weak opposition at home.
🔄
Rotation Risk
Europa League double gameweeks create captaincy rotation traps. Always check fixture congestion before armband decisions.

How to Build an FPL Squad on a Budget

Fantasy Premier League rewards managers who distribute budget intelligently rather than loading up on premium players across every position. The conventional wisdom is to spend big in midfield and forward positions — where the most attacking returns are generated — while keeping goalkeeper and defensive selections at reasonable price points that don't compromise your midfield spending power. A goalkeeper costing £5.0m and delivering consistent clean sheets from a competitive team can be just as effective as an £8.0m option from a top-six side.

Budget enablers are players priced under £6.0m who return consistently without eating into the premium allocation. These are typically reliable squad players at mid-table clubs who feature every week, receive bonus points for workrate, and occasionally contribute goals and assists. Identifying these players early — before their prices rise — is one of the hallmarks of an elite FPL manager. Price changes occur daily based on transfer activity, so moving first on a budget enabler before they become popular can save you significant team value over the course of a season.

Double Gameweeks and Blank Gameweeks

The FPL calendar always includes blank gameweeks — rounds in which some clubs have no fixture due to FA Cup or European schedule conflicts — and double gameweeks, in which certain clubs play twice. Preparing for these rounds is a key differentiator between average and top-ranked managers. The wildcard and free hit chips exist partly to deal with these anomalies, and timing their use correctly around double gameweeks is the single highest-leverage decision you can make in any FPL season. Managers who plan ahead, identifying which clubs are likely to accumulate double gameweeks, can build squads that deliver outsize hauls when it matters most.

When to Use Your Chips

FPL provides five chips — Wildcard x2, Bench Boost, Free Hit, and Triple Captain — that can transform your season if used correctly. The Wildcard is best deployed to react to injuries and form changes, or to set up a squad for a run of fixtures. Triple Captain magnifies your captain's score and is most effective when placed on Haaland, Salah, or another premium asset in a favourable home fixture during a double gameweek. Bench Boost should be activated when you have four high-scoring players on the bench, ideally during a double gameweek when those players are likely to start twice. Free Hit is the emergency tool — it allows you to completely change your squad for one week only, reverting to your original team afterwards, and is best saved for the most severe blank gameweek of the season.
