Phil Foden 2025-26

Phil Foden is the embodiment of Manchester City's academy philosophy. The Stockport-born midfielder has spent his entire professional career at the Etihad, developing under Pep Guardiola into one of the most complete midfield players in Europe. His ability to influence games from multiple positions — cutting inside from the left, operating as a false nine, or driving from deep — makes him near-impossible to mark. England need him badly in 2026.

The Foden Story

🏠

The Stockport Nino: An Unbreakable City Bond

Phil Foden joined Manchester City's academy at the age of eight and has never left. That loyalty, rare in the modern game, has been repaid many times over. Guardiola described him as "the most talented player I have ever seen" when Foden was still a teenager — high praise from a manager who has worked with Xavi, Iniesta, Messi and Kompany. The Stockport kid who never needed to look anywhere else is now one of City's most indispensable players.

🏆

Foden's Treble Season: The Defining 2022-23

When Manchester City won the treble in 2022-23 — Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League — Foden was central to it all. He ended the season with 27 goal contributions and produced some of the most technically dazzling performances of the campaign. His evolution from academy prodigy to genuine match-winner was complete. The PL Player of the Season award in 2023-24 confirmed what everyone already knew: Foden is among the very best in the world.

England's Wild Card: Can Foden Carry the Nation in 2026?

England's relationship with Foden at international level has been complicated by tactical questions about where he fits best. But heading into the 2026 World Cup, those debates are fading. Foden has matured into a player who can impact games wherever he is deployed — and with Kane leading the line and Saka wide right, a free Foden in behind is England's most dangerous configuration. If England are to go deep in 2026, Foden will need to be at his best.
