The New 48-Team Format

FIFA World Cup 2026 represents the biggest expansion in the tournament's history. Growing from 32 to 48 teams means 16 additional nations will experience the world's greatest sporting event for the first time or after long absences. The format change brings African, Asian, CONCACAF and Oceania confederations additional qualification berths, reflecting football's global growth.

The group stage features 16 groups of three teams. Each team plays two matches in the group stage, with the top two from each group advancing. This is a significant departure from the traditional four-team groups where three matches were played — the two-game format means almost no margin for error from the very first match.

After the group stage, the 32 qualifiers enter a new knockout round — the round of 32 — before the tournament proceeds through the familiar round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place playoff and final. The expanded format adds matches, drama, and crucially — more revenue opportunities for FIFA and host nations.
