FIFA WORLD CUP 2026 GROUP STAGE DRAW 48 TEAMS · 12 GROUPS

World Cup 2026
Group Stage Draw Guide

The expanded 48-team World Cup introduces 12 groups of four for the first time in tournament history. Understanding how the draw works — the pot system, seeding rules and host nation placement — is the key to reading any group outcome.

How the 2026 Draw Works

The Basic Rules

  • 48 teams drawn into 12 groups of 4 (Groups A–L)
  • Each group plays a round-robin (3 matches per team)
  • Top 2 from each group qualify + 8 best third-placed teams
  • 32 teams advance to the knockout round of 32
  • Geographic restrictions prevent same-confederation clashes where possible
  • Host nations are seeded into Pot 1 and pre-assigned specific groups

Host Nation Advantage

USA, Canada and Mexico all automatically qualify and are seeded into Pot 1. Each host is assigned to a pre-determined group to maximise home match opportunities across all three countries.

The USA plays their group games in US stadiums. Canada plays in Canadian venues. Mexico in Mexican venues. This means all three nations have a significant home crowd advantage through the group stage and potentially the knockout rounds if venues align.

Home advantage in a World Cup is historically worth approximately 1 extra goal per match in expected outcome terms.

The Pot System — Who Goes Where?

Pot 1

Host nations (USA, Canada, Mexico) + top-ranked teams by FIFA ranking

USA Canada Mexico France Brazil England Argentina Spain Portugal Germany Netherlands Belgium
Pot 2

Next tier of ranked nations

Uruguay Colombia Japan Morocco Senegal Australia South Korea Denmark Switzerland Croatia Ecuador Iran
Pot 3

Mid-tier qualifiers from UEFA, CONMEBOL, CAF, AFC

Turkey Ukraine Poland Serbia Austria Slovakia Czech Republic Wales Chile Peru Nigeria Egypt
Pot 4

Remaining qualifiers from all confederations

Saudi Arabia Qatar Cameroon Ghana South Africa Algeria Costa Rica Panama Honduras Bolivia New Zealand Indonesia

The 12 Groups — A to L

For the first time in World Cup history, 12 groups replace the traditional 8. Each group contains teams from Pots 1, 2, 3 and 4 — meaning every group has a clear Pot 1 favourite and genuine dark horse potential from the lower pots. This structure is designed to reduce dead rubbers in the group stage.

Key Draw Scenarios — Groups of Death

The Nightmare Draw: France vs Brazil vs Argentina

If any two of France, Brazil or Argentina were drawn into the same group (theoretically possible if seedings do not separate them), the tournament's group of death would be historic. Three World Cup winners in one group of four is the scenario every fan dreads — and every neutral licks their lips at.

Host Nation Groups — USA, Canada, Mexico

Each host will be pre-assigned a group. The USA's group will be in a US venue — likely MetLife Stadium (New Jersey/New York), SoFi Stadium (LA) or AT&T Stadium (Dallas). Canada likely plays in Toronto or Vancouver. Mexico in Guadalajara or Mexico City's Estadio Azteca. The hosts will attract the easiest pot draws possible to maximise knockout round runs and local fanbase engagement.

Dark Horse Groups — Pot 4 Surprises

Every World Cup has a Pot 4 team that nobody expects. Saudi Arabia beating Argentina in 2022 showed that upsets at this level happen. The 2026 tournament's expanded format means more Pot 4 teams — and more potential for the draw's wildcard team to disrupt the group entirely.
