For the first time in World Cup history, 48 nations compete. More places across all confederations means more nations than ever have a genuine shot at qualifying for the biggest tournament on earth.
Host Nations Automatic
USA, Canada and Mexico qualify automatically as co-hosts. Three of football's fastest-growing markets are guaranteed places — building unprecedented local interest across North America for the 2026 tournament.
UEFA — 16 Places
Europe gets the most places of any confederation — 16 teams from UEFA, including a playoff round for nations that don't finish top of their qualifying group. Big European nations can still qualify via playoffs.
CONMEBOL — 6 Places
South America always produces some of the world's best teams. The CONMEBOL qualification group is brutal — Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay and Ecuador are all in the mix for 6 direct places plus one intercontinental playoff spot.
CAF — 9 Places
Africa has never had so many World Cup places — 9 teams from CAF. The expansion has transformed World Cup qualification politics across the continent with powerhouses like Nigeria, Senegal and Morocco all pushing for spots.
Intercontinental Playoff
