Belgium — World Cup 2026
For over a decade, Belgium have been ranked among the top three teams in the world. They have produced Kevin De Bruyne — arguably the finest midfielder of his generation. They have Romelu Lukaku, one of international football's most prolific goalscorers. They have Thibaut Courtois, the best goalkeeper on the planet. And yet — no major trophy. The Golden Generation that could have won everything heads to North America for one final reckoning. In 2026, it is now or never for the Red Devils.
Key Storylines
De Bruyne — The Greatest Who Never Won
Kevin De Bruyne has won everything at Manchester City — Premier League titles, Champions League, domestic cups. But on the international stage, despite being arguably the world's most complete midfielder for nearly a decade, Belgium have nothing. No major trophy. The World Cup in 2026 may be De Bruyne's last realistic chance to add an international medal to his extraordinary club career. If Belgium are to win it, De Bruyne's brilliance — his vision, his through-balls, his ability to create chances from nothing — will need to be at its peak for every single match.
Lukaku — Goals Guarantee Nothing Without a Trophy
Romelu Lukaku is Belgium's all-time leading goalscorer. He has scored in World Cups, in European Championships, in qualifying campaigns. The goals have always come. But Lukaku's career is haunted by the one thing that matters most in international football — a major tournament win. At club level he has had mixed fortunes since his peak at Inter Milan, but when he pulls on the Belgium shirt, the goalscoring instinct returns. In Group G against Egypt, Iran and Jamaica, Lukaku should feast. The question is whether he can continue that form through the knockouts when the pressure reaches maximum intensity.
The Heartbreak — 2018, 2020, 2022
The Belgium Golden Generation's tournament record reads like a series of near-misses that become more painful with each passing year. In 2018 they beat Brazil to reach the semi-final, then lost to France — who went on to win. In Euro 2020 they reached the quarter-final, losing to Italy on a De Bruyne injury. In Qatar 2022 it all fell apart — they failed to get out of the group, losing to Morocco. Three tournaments, three eliminations before the final. The mental scars of Qatar 2022 are fresh, and the question for 2026 is whether Tedesco can galvanise this squad for one genuine last push.
Jeremy Doku — The New Generation Spark
While De Bruyne and Lukaku carry the weight of Belgium's golden generation, Jeremy Doku represents the future. His pace, his directness, his ability to take on defenders and make things happen in the final third have made him one of the most exciting young wingers in European football. At Manchester City he has shown he can perform at the highest level week in, week out. For Belgium, Doku provides the pace and width that can stretch defences and create space for De Bruyne to operate. When Doku is on form and the full back is terrified of being exposed, Belgium look a different team.
Courtois Returns — The World's Best Goalkeeper
Thibaut Courtois's return from a serious ACL injury has been one of the most inspiring stories in European football. At Real Madrid he had already established himself as the best goalkeeper on the planet — his performance in the 2022 Champions League final was one of the greatest individual displays in the tournament's history. Returning from injury to his peak form, Courtois gives Belgium the most complete goalkeeping option at the 2026 World Cup. In a tournament where tight margins decide everything, having the world's best goalkeeper behind a defensively organised side could be the decisive factor.
Group G — Achievable Path to the Knockouts
Belgium's Group G draw gives them Egypt, Iran and Jamaica — a genuinely manageable set of opponents for a team of their quality. Egypt bring Mohamed Salah and genuine threat, but Belgium should have too much quality across the pitch. Iran are organised and disciplined but limited in attacking creativity. Jamaica, while qualifying is an achievement in itself, will struggle against a Belgium side motivated to erase the memory of Qatar 2022. Winning the group is the minimum expectation. After that, the knockout draw becomes the deciding factor — and Belgium, with De Bruyne fit and firing, could go very deep.
