Liverpool’s injury room is getting crowded again
Arne Slot delivered a classic "good news, bad news" update today that will leave Anfield fans feeling conflicted. The headline is that Alexander Isak is finally nearing the end of his recovery from a fractured leg, but the cost is high.
Both Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker have been ruled out of Saturday’s trip to Brighton. It is a massive hit to the spine of the team at the worst possible moment.
"Alexander Isak will be available for Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain."
The Swedish record-breaker returns
Isak hasn't played since December. The £125m striker was just starting to find his rhythm before that horrific broken leg, and Slot needs him back to lead the line in Europe.
Having him ready for PSG next month is a huge lift. Liverpool have looked toothless in big games without his movement, but asking a player to jump straight into a Champions League quarter-final after four months out is a massive gamble.
Defensive and offensive voids
Losing Salah for the Brighton game is a tactical nightmare. Without his threat on the right, the attack loses its most reliable outlet. Add the absence of Alisson in goal, and Brighton’s high-press system suddenly looks a lot more threatening.
The lack of depth in the goalkeeper department is finally starting to bite. If Liverpool drop points at the Amex, Slot’s decision-making regarding player fitness will come under heavy fire from the fans.
The medical room is a mess
This squad is looking thin. While getting a £125m asset back is great for the long term, the fact that two more stars have gone down suggests the current workload is unsustainable.
Slot needs to figure out why his best players are breaking. Relying on a half-fit Isak to save the season against PSG is a desperate plan, and it might just blow up in his face.
