The Big Picture

The English second tier has reached its breaking point as the final matchdays scramble the promotion picture. With Coventry City already popping champagne, the race for the remaining spots has turned chaotic.

The Rankings

1. Coventry City

Frank Lampard has officially delivered, securing the Championship title with room to spare after a dominant campaign. Their 3-1 win over Wrexham proved they aren't coasting, as Coventry celebrated their title win in proper fashion. They remain the gold standard heading into the final week.

2. Hearts

Derek McInnes has somehow convinced the skeptics that his side can actually finish the job. After surviving a high-pressure visit to Easter Road, their resolve is no longer in doubt according to recent reporting on their title push. There is a grit here that was missing in previous seasons.

3. Wrexham

The playoff dream is hanging by a thread following that stinging loss to Coventry. Their manager needs to find a way to reset morale before the final push, as their form over the last three matches has been underwhelming. They remain in the mix purely due to point accumulation earlier in the year.

4. West Bromwich Albion

Gary Megson recently pointed out that the current coaching staff has the necessary personnel management to keep the squad focused. It is a vital asset for a group that has struggled with consistency throughout the spring months. They are currently performing better on the pitch than their 2002 counterparts ever did during their promotion era.

5. Middlesbrough

A sneaky contender that has avoided the headlines while methodically picking up points. They lack the high-end scoring outbursts of Coventry, but their defensive organization is currently second to none. If they sneak into the top four, they are the team nobody wants to play in the knockout round.

6. Sheffield United

The Blades are currently looking over their shoulders as the chasing pack closes in. Their inability to close out games in the final ten minutes has become a trend that could haunt them come May. It is a discipline issue that keeps them outside the top five.

7. Norwich City

Norwich is playing the role of the spoiler perfectly. They have nothing left to play for, yet they keep putting in high-intensity shifts that ruin other teams' weekends. They represent a clear danger to any team hoping for an easy three points.

8. Sunderland

A massive disappointment relative to their preseason wage bill. Watching this attack try to execute a simple transition game into the final third has been painful at times. They have been mathematically out of the automatic hunt for weeks, which is a massive failure.

9. Queens Park Rangers

QPR is currently fighting to stay out of the bottom half of the table. Their defensive errors in transition have allowed even the worst teams in the league to generate significant shots on target. There is very little structure to speak of under their current tactical setup.

10. Hull City

They are simply hovering, waiting for the season to end so they can overhaul the roster. While they have avoided relegation, the quality of play has been substandard since the turn of the calendar year. They are essentially spinning their wheels at this point in the schedule.

Honorable Mentions

Blackburn Rovers narrowly missed the cut due to a late-season collapse in form. Portsmouth also deserves credit for staying competitive despite a lack of depth throughout their midfield roster. The final five days of the season will likely settle these positions for good.
