The April Curse Strikes Early
It is late March, the weather is finally getting slightly less miserable, and Arsenal are doing that thing they always do. They are making their fans sweat blood. We are staring down the barrel of a defining April, and the treatment room at London Colney is suddenly looking like a crowded nightclub. If you support this club, you probably haven't had a restful night of sleep since February.
Let's start with the headline that made half of North London throw their morning coffee at the wall. Eberechi Eze is broken. Not just a knock. Not a minor situation where he sits out the weekend. According to Sky Sports, Eze is facing several weeks out injured. He is officially set to miss a massive run of games right when the calendar is trying to murder this squad.
Mikel Arteta looked like he hadn't slept in a week during his presser. As the Daily Mail reported, Arteta confirmed post-match that a key star was forced to miss the final with a calf injury. He said they are waiting six or seven days just to do a scan. You know it is bad when you have to wait a week just for the swelling to go down enough to put the guy in a tube.
The Walking Wounded
Just look at the state of this squad right now:
- Eberechi Eze is facing several weeks on the sidelines.
- An unnamed star is nursing a bad calf injury and waiting a week for a scan.
- Martin Odegaard is sidelined, though he has finally set a potential return date.
Do you know what happens in two weeks? The Champions League Quarter-Finals kick off on April 7. That is exactly 14 days from now. Arsenal are walking into the biggest two-legged European tie they've had in a decade, and they are doing it with duct tape and painkillers. The title run-in is completely unforgiving this year. Missing Eze for this stretch is an absolute disaster.
Think back to how many times we have seen this exact movie play out. Arsenal get to March. They look like world-beaters. The fans start mapping out parade routes in North London. And then, out of absolutely nowhere, the physical toll of Arteta’s high-intensity pressing scheme cashes its check. It happened with William Saliba's back a few years ago. It happened when they bottled the top four against Spurs before that. April is historically the month where Arsenal's wheels get a little wobbly. And now they are entering this cursed month with a medical room that looks like a triage center.
We don't even know exactly who this unnamed star is yet, but knowing Arsenal's luck, it is probably a starting center-back. The margins at the top of the Premier League are microscopic. You drop points in one away game on a rainy Tuesday, and the title is gone. Manchester City and Liverpool do not wait around for your calf muscles to heal.
It genuinely makes you question the medical staff or Arteta's refusal to rotate when the games are piling up. I love Mikel, but the man treats his starting XI like they are made of titanium. They are not. He runs his key guys into the ground, and we act shocked when muscles start snapping in March.
The Dumbest Transfer Take of 2026
Then we have the captain. Martin Odegaard is dealing with his own physical nightmare. The only sliver of good news is that Sky Sports noted Odegaard has set a potential injury return date. We don't have the exact fixture yet, but the mere fact he has a date circled on the calendar means his season isn't entirely chalked.
But of course, because this is Arsenal, we can't just have a normal injury crisis. We have to have absolute lunacy injected into the discourse. Some galaxy-brain pundits have looked at this injury situation, looked at Arsenal's squad, and decided the best course of action is to sell the club captain. I am not joking.
Arsenal told to 'cash in' on Martin Odegaard and fund world-class £78m winger signing
That is an actual headline from Football365. They are tipping Arteta to sell Odegaard this summer. Why? To fund a massive move for Napoli's Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, with PSG apparently sniffing around to buy the Norwegian.
Why it won't happen (and shouldn't)
Let's unpack this level of stupidity for a second.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is an unbelievable football player. Nobody is denying that. The guy tears fullbacks apart for fun. Getting him for a reported fee of £78m would honestly be decent business in this inflated market. He would add absolute fire to the left flank. But selling your creative heartbeat to do it? Have we collectively lost our minds?
Odegaard is the system. He triggers the press. He dictates the tempo. He screams at people when they jog back on defense. You do not sell the guy who dragged you out of the banter era just to buy a shiny new winger from Italy. It is the kind of move you make on FIFA Career Mode when you are bored at 2 AM, not how you run an elite football club chasing Premier League titles.
And who is supposed to play the killer pass to Kvaratskhelia if Odegaard is gone? Declan Rice? Thomas Partey's ghost? The entire tactical setup relies on Odegaard receiving the ball in tight spaces and finding the wide players. Without him, bringing in a world-class winger is utterly pointless.
And who is supposed to buy Odegaard in this fantasy scenario? Paris Saint-Germain. Because of course it is PSG. Whenever a ridiculous transfer rumor needs a buyer with infinite money, PSG is the default answer. They are the boogeyman of European football finances.
The Real Crisis
The people suggesting this need to have their microphones taken away. You don't cash in on a prime-age elite playmaker who loves the club. You build around him. Arsenal's problem right now isn't that they need to replace Odegaard. Their problem is that they look utterly lost whenever he isn't on the pitch.
This takes me back to my main criticism of Arteta's squad building. He has built a phenomenal starting lineup. It is a terrifying team on its day. But the drop-off behind his key guys is still too steep. When Eze goes down, the panic is immediate. When Odegaard gets a knock, the entire tactical plan looks shaky.
If you are relying on guys who are constantly a tweaked calf away from missing six weeks, you are living on borrowed time. You cannot win the Premier League and the Champions League by playing the same thirteen guys until their legs fall off. The April schedule is a meat grinder.
Following the UCL quarters, there is a brutal stretch of domestic games. If Arsenal want to survive until that May 28 final, they need a miracle from the physio department. So, instead of drawing up ridiculous transfer swap ideas, maybe the brain trust at the Emirates should focus on keeping the players they currently have upright.
Right now, the only thing getting cashed in is Arsenal's margin for error. It is completely gone. The next month is going to be absolute carnage, and Arteta has to figure out how to survive it without half his midfield.
