I just watched ninety minutes of Ghana versus Panama, and I need an apology. You have to wonder whether the managers were allergic to the concept of a forward pass or if both squads collectively decided to audition for a local amateur league.

The match ended in a 0-0 draw, but calling it football feels like a stretch. It was more of a stubborn standoff where neither side possessed the technical proficiency to break a deadlock that existed solely because of their own incompetence.

The midfield vacuum

Every time Ghana tried to move the ball through the center, it went into a black hole. They failed to connect more than three passes in the middle third for the entire first half.

Panama, meanwhile, looked content to sit back and swallow pressure. They didn't even try to counter, which is a bizarre choice when you are facing a defense as disjointed as the one sitting in front of them.

As Sky Sports observed during the live coverage, neither side found a rhythm once today. There was no transition play, no urgency, and absolutely zero creativity in the final third.

Missing the mark

By the 75th minute, the crowd was audibly restless. You cannot drag thousands of fans to a stadium only to serve them a meal of aimless long balls and miscontrolled touches.

Ghana’s striker had two clear opportunities to pull the trigger but chose to shuffle the ball sideways instead. Watching professional athletes refuse to shoot from twelve yards out is infuriating.

Panama wasn't any better. They managed a single shot on target, a weak effort that the keeper could have stopped with a book in his hand. It was a statistical black eye for the tournament.

Verdict on the group stage

If you're a fan of high-level tactics, look elsewhere. This was a masterclass in how to waste time and kill momentum.

We are still waiting for a team from this group to show any semblance of tournament life. After that display, I would bet my last beer that whoever advances will be embarrassed in the knockout rounds.

If the 0-0 scoreline was not proof enough, look at the heat maps. Both teams spent the entire match allergic to the opponent's 18-yard box.

Maybe next time they can play at a pace that doesn't put the entire stadium to sleep. We demand better than this snooze-fest.
